Great Zambesi river in Zambia

Zambezi River simply means “Great River” in our Zambian Tonga language. The Zambezi is the fourth longest east flowing river here in Africa, it beautifully flows through six African countries. The mighty Zambezi River lies at 1,500 meters (4, 900ft) above sea level in Mwinilunga district in Zambia. It passes through Zambia, Angola, Namibia, and finally to Zimbabwe discharging into the Indian ocean at the delta in Mozambique.

WHY IT’S CALLED THE RIVER OF LIFE

This river supports many animal populations in many national parks and game reserves, by providing water. Animals found near the river include: hippos, lions, buffalos, elephants, Nile crocodiles, African fish eagle, zebras.

Amazing Fish species include, tiger fish, vundu fish, cat fish, bull shark and hundreds of other species. These fish species are one of the sources for food for the local Zambian people.

One would imagine what animals would do without this great river as their water source, wildlife would go extinct and there would be no animal life. And that why it’s called the river of life.

The rivers beauty attracts tourist from all over the world wanting to see this amusement. Tourism is one of the fastest growing industries, Zambia relies on this industry for development and providing employment to the local people. Well, I happen to work in the tourism industry as well. Tourists have boat safaris, sun set boat cruises, game viewing, fishing, and the world’s most thrilling “white river rafting” which am very tempted to do.

Food one is of the human needs, the Zambian people depend on the Zambezi River as a food source the local fishermen catch fish for their families and also to sell at the markets.
Yes farming is also one of our means of providing food, but it’s better to have more than one food source the land and the great river.

This great Zambezi River has been a river of life for both animals and the Zambian
people for many years now.
