There you can smell the real essence of <strong>Africa<\/strong>. <strong>Bububu<\/strong> is a village with a old past of the first <strong>railway<\/strong> in <strong>East Africa<\/strong> and a present of <strong>palace ruins<\/strong> lost in mangrooves and bushes.<\/p>\n<p>It is located on the central west coast, 10 kilometres north of\u00a0<a title=\"Stone Town\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stone_Town\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Stone Town<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?q=bububu%20zanzibar&amp;t=m&amp;z=13&amp;output=embed&amp;iwloc=near\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" aria-label=\"bububu zanzibar\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>My passion for History brought me here several years ago, and I still didn&#8217;t finished to discover.<\/p>\n<p><b>Zanzibar\u00a0<\/b>was the first country in\u00a0<b>East Africa<\/b>\u00a0to introduce the steam locomotive. In 1879 Sultan\u00a0Bargash bin Said\u00a0ordered to construct a seven-mile railway from his palace at\u00a0<b>Stone Town<\/b>\u00a0to\u00a0<b>Chukwani<\/b>. Initially there were two Pullman cars hauled by mules, but in 1881 the Sultan ordered a tank locomotive from an English locomotive builder company.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hoaexp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/BUBUBU-zanzibar-tanzania-railway-secret-beaches-and-true-africa-9-768x426.jpg\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hoaexp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/BUBUBU-zanzibar-tanzania-railway-secret-beaches-and-true-africa-9-768x426.jpg 768w, https:\/\/hoaexp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/BUBUBU-zanzibar-tanzania-railway-secret-beaches-and-true-africa-9-300x166.jpg 300w, https:\/\/hoaexp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/BUBUBU-zanzibar-tanzania-railway-secret-beaches-and-true-africa-9-600x333.jpg 600w, https:\/\/hoaexp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/BUBUBU-zanzibar-tanzania-railway-secret-beaches-and-true-africa-9.jpg 920w\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The first train in Zanzibar<\/p>\n<p>In 1905 the American Company Arnold Cheyney built another piece of <strong>railway<\/strong>, making connection from <strong>Stone Town<\/strong>\u00a0to the village of\u00a0<strong>Bububu<\/strong>. The <strong>railway<\/strong> was notorious for set fire to property and the surrounding countryside but it ran for twenty-five years, until 1930.<\/p>\n<p>It was extremely popular and largely used by the local population. There was a special first-class coach for the benefit of those passengers who wish to keep a different look of the island. The <b>railway <\/b>also traversed some streets of the city, and it was a source of wonderment. \u00a0In 1911, the railway was sold to the Government, and by 1922 the passenger service ceased. Roads connections improved and motor vehicles on the island increased, so its popularity diminished. If you want to see it close you can access from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mangrovelodge.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mangroove Lodge<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ngalawahotel.co.tz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ngalawa Hotel &amp; Resort<\/a> or from <a href=\"https:\/\/newmarkhotels.com\/places\/lodges\/chuini-zanzibar-beach-lodge\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chuini Zanzibar Beach Lodge<\/a>. The ruins are on private land and the access is forbidden, but entering from one of these places will bring you very close. Inside <a href=\"https:\/\/ngalawahotel.co.tz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ngalawa Hotel<\/a> there is a local disco open sometimes in the night, and during these events all the palace is brightened with multicolor lights. During the day an old bridge allow you to cross the river from the other side, on the feet of the <b>ruins<\/b> nowadays covered of plants.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/newmarkhotels.com\/places\/lodges\/chuini-zanzibar-beach-lodge\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chuini Zanzibar Beach Lodge<\/a> is built on the old <b>ruins <\/b>of the wifes of the sultan that were living in a different palace.
