Its architectures, mostly dating back to the XIX century, reflect the diverse influences underling\u00a0the swahili culture, giving a unique mixture of arab, persian, indian and european elements.<\/p>\n<p>For this reason the town was designed as a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/whc.unesco.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITE<\/a>\u00a0in 2000.<\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?q=stone%20town%20zanzibar&amp;t=m&amp;z=13&amp;output=embed&amp;iwloc=near\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" aria-label=\"stone town zanzibar\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><i><u>The old slave market and the anglican church.<\/u><\/i><\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0Anglican\u00a0cathedral\u00a0of\u00a0Christ Church is sited on Mkunazini Road, and was built at the end of the 19th century by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Edward_Steere\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Edward Steere<\/a>, third\u00a0bishop\u00a0of <b>Zanzibar<\/b>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-24\"><\/sup>\u00a0The Cathedral was constructed in a large area at the centre of <b>Stone Town<\/b> that previously hosted the biggest slave market of <b>Zanzibar.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>This place was chosen to celebrate the end of slavery, and the altar was in the exact spot where the main whipping post of the market used to be.<\/p>\n<p>Besides the church there are a monument to the slaves and a museum on the history of slavery.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Maze of narrow streets.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The heart of <b>Stone Town<\/b> mostly consists in a maze of narrow streets limited by houses, mosques, bazaars and shops. Most streets are too narrow for cars but not bicycles\u00a0and\u00a0motorbikes that are the first means of transportation.<\/p>\n<p>The seafront has a wide street and a long and large seawalk.<\/p>\n<p><b>Stone Town<\/b>&#8216;s architecture has a number of distinctive features, as a result of Arab, Persian, Indian, European, and African traditions mixing together. The name &#8220;<b>Stone Town<\/b>&#8221; comes from the use of\u00a0coral stone\u00a0as main construction material. This gives the town a characteristic reddish warm colour.\u00a0Traditional buildings have a\u00a0<i>baraza<\/i>, a long stone bench along the outside walls; this is used as an elevated sidewalk if heavy rains make the streets impracticable, or otherwise as benches to sit down and spend some time to socialize. Carvings are often\u00a0Islamic\u00a0in content (for example, many consist of verses of the\u00a0Qur&#8217;an), but other symbolism is occasionally used, as Indian\u00a0lotus flowers\u00a0as emblems of prosperity.<\/p>\n<p><em>The sea front<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<b>Beit-al-Ajaib<\/b>&#8220;, better known as &#8220;<b>The\u00a0House of Wonders<\/b>&#8221; or &#8220;<b>Palace of Wonders<\/b>&#8220;, in located along the <b>Stone Town<\/b> seafront, and is probably the most well-known landmarks of <b>Stone Town<\/b>. It was built in 1883 and has been formerly the\u00a0Sultan&#8217;s residence till the <b>Zanzibar <\/b>revolution.<\/p>\n<p>It was the first building in <b>Zanzibar <\/b>to have\u00a0electricity\u00a0and the first building in East Africa to have a\u00a0lift.<\/p>\n<p>Now its interior has been dedicated to a museum on <b>Swahili<\/b> and <b>Zanzibar culture<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0Old Fort, &#8220;Ngome Kongwe&#8221; in Swahili, adjacent to the <b>House of Wonders<\/b>, is a heavy stone fortress that was built in the 17th century by the Omanis. Also known as the Omani fort it was built to protect the city from European invasions.<\/p>\n<p>It has a roughly square shape and the internal courtyard is now a cultural centre with shops, workshops, and a small arena where live dance and music shows are held daily.<sup id=\"cite_ref-:0_13-1\"><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Every year, for one week, the fort is used for the\u00a0Zanzibar International Film Festival.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hoaexp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Stone-town-Zanzibar-Tanzania.jpg\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hoaexp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Stone-town-Zanzibar-Tanzania.jpg 800w, https:\/\/hoaexp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Stone-town-Zanzibar-Tanzania-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/hoaexp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Stone-town-Zanzibar-Tanzania-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/hoaexp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Stone-town-Zanzibar-Tanzania-600x338.jpg 600w\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>The\u00a0Forodhani Gardens<\/em><\/p>\n<p>There is a small park in the main sea walk of<strong> Stone Town<\/strong>, right in front of the <strong>Old Fort<\/strong> and the <strong>House of Wonders<\/strong>.
