{"id":5510,"date":"2019-11-13T21:50:48","date_gmt":"2019-11-13T21:50:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hoaexp.com\/?p=5510"},"modified":"2020-11-02T10:14:29","modified_gmt":"2020-11-02T09:14:29","slug":"zanzibar-prison-island","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.hoaexp.com\/en\/2019\/11\/13\/zanzibar-prison-island\/","title":{"rendered":"Zanzibar: Prison Island"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wpb-content-wrapper\"><p>[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]After the big islands of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Unguja\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Unguja<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pemba_Island\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pemba<\/a>, another most know island of the <strong>Zanzibar<\/strong> Archipelago is <strong>Prison Island<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?q=prison%20island%20zanzibar&amp;t=m&amp;z=12&amp;output=embed&amp;iwloc=near\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" aria-label=\"prison island zanzibar\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><i><u>History<\/u><\/i><\/p>\n<p><strong>Changuu<\/strong> is the name, after the swahili name of the fish which is common in the waters around it, of <strong>Prison Island<\/strong>, that it is also shown as <strong>Kibandiko Island<\/strong> on some old maps. But this name is no longer used.<\/p>\n<p>The island was inhabited untill 1860, when the first Sultan of Zanzibar Majid bin Said gave it to two zanzibar arabs who used it as a prison for rebellious slaves prior to shipping them abroad or sell them at the slave market in Stone Town.<\/p>\n<p><b>Zanzibar<\/b> became a british protectorate following 1890 Heligoland Zanzibar treat with government, this resulted in the appointment of british first minister Lord William Mattew in October 1891 when Lord Mattew purchased changu from it is arabs owner on behalf the Zanzibar government.<\/p>\n<p>In 1893 with the intention\u00a0of building a prison upon it, the prison was to have housed violent and recidivist criminals from the part of Africa mainland which was under the jurisdiction of <b>Zanzibar<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>Despite of prison buildings being completed in 1894 and the island became known commonly as the <b>Prison Island<\/b> the authorities who concerned by risk of disease epidemics affecting Stone Town, then East Africans main port.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1426 size-full\" (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Actually just the ruins of the old square where the slaves where counted remains, while this island was literally converted is a conservative kingdom for Aldabra giant tortoise.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"428\" \/><\/p>\n<p><i><u>The Aldabra giant tortoise<\/u><\/i><\/p>\n<p>In 1919 the British governor of\u00a0Seychelles\u00a0sent a gift of four\u00a0Aldabra giant tortoises\u00a0to <b>Prison Island<\/b> from the island of\u00a0Aldabra.<sup id=\"cite_ref-private_1-8\"><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>These tortoises bred quickly and they reached the number of 200. Unfortunately local people began to steal the tortoises for sale in the world as pets or for food and their numbers dropped rapidly to just seven in 1996.<sup id=\"cite_ref-travel_2-3\"><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Other 80 animals were taken to the island in 1996 to increase the numbers but 40 of them vanished.
