Smaller than <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.hoaexp.com\/2020\/07\/04\/welcome-to-dar-es-salaam\/\">Dar Es Salaam<\/a>, quieter than <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.hoaexp.com\/2020\/07\/15\/arusha-the-safari-capital-city\/\">Arusha<\/a>, brighter than the capital Dodoma, <strong>Tanga is the third city<\/strong> of Tanzania with over 270.000 inhabitants. And certainly a city to discover and to live.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><strong>The name means &#8220;sailing&#8221;,<\/strong> which already says it all about this city and its port. No matter how beautiful Tanga&#8217;s historic centre is, the real soul of the place is <strong>the harbour<\/strong> and the neighbourhoods around it. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tanga.go.tz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tanga<\/a> is also the name of the lovely region of which the city is proud capital. Why should you choose this corner of Tanzania for your African trip? Well, because you just <strong>cannot miss it.<\/strong><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<h2>Tanga, from slave trades to tourism<\/h2>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Tanga used to be a quiet fishermen town up to the 16th century. Then, the Portuguese colonization turned it into <strong>one of the most important points of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/east-africas-forgotten-slave-trade\/a-50126759\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">slave trades<\/a> in Africa.<\/strong> This sad &#8220;business&#8221; made the city grow larger and larger, though today it is seen as a shame.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><strong>Germans arrived in the 19th century<\/strong> and changed the architectural aspect of the small capital. It became an elegant, rich city and very important too. At least until 1900, when the new agricultural policy of <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.hoaexp.com\/st_location\/eastern-africa\/tanzania\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tanzania<\/a> moved the people&#8217;s interest to the inner towns.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><strong>Recently, tourism has discovered again the region of Tanga<\/strong> and its capital city. But besides the beauty of the city itself, tourist love the surroundings and use Tanga as a base for their trips and safaris.<\/div>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_gallery type=&#8221;image_grid&#8221; images=&#8221;13693&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h2>Tanga port and its surroundings<\/h2>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><strong>The port of Tanga<\/strong> is the second largest in Tanzania, today. But it is also <strong>the oldest.<\/strong> It seems it was a known and active harbour since the 6th century AD! Today it is very modern, the beating heart of the city.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Also tourism lives around it. <strong>The surrounding areas are the most beautiful,<\/strong> with monuments, shops, restaurants, hotels, museums and panoramic points. Some of the most charming beaches in Tanga are very close to the port.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<h2>More tourist attractions near Tanga<\/h2>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Not far from Tanga, there are interesting places to visit. <strong>Toten Island<\/strong> is a small islet set off the port.\u00a0 It used to be a cemetery-island but it also keeps the <strong>ruins of very old mosques<\/strong>. Old mosques and tombs make another interesting archaeological site: <strong>Tongoni<\/strong>. This used to be an important trade town, before the Portuguese dominion left it abandoned.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><strong>Worth the visit: the hot springs of Galanos, the Magoroto Lake, Amboni Limestone Caves<\/strong> (8 km from Tanga, covering over 230 sq.km). Do not miss the chance of your Tanganese safari! <strong>Saadani National Park<\/strong> is 240 km south of the city and you can get there in a 4-hour drive. Speaking of beautiful nature &#8230; Tanga is proud of its <strong>protected mangrove bushes,<\/strong> mainly growing along the coast.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<h2>Tourist information<\/h2>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Tanga is well connected to the rest of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tanzania.go.tz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tanzania<\/a> thanks to motorways, railways and <strong>a small airport.<\/strong> Flights land here from <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.hoaexp.com\/2020\/07\/04\/welcome-to-dar-es-salaam\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dar Es Salaam<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.hoaexp.com\/st_location\/eastern-africa\/zanzibar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Zanzibar<\/a> everyday.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><strong>The best period to visit Tanga<\/strong> is from June to August.
