[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]A stunning Dr Derek Lee, founder and scientist at the Wild Nature Institute of Tanzania<\/strong><\/a>, was the first one who spotted this white giraffe<\/strong> called then Omo<\/strong>, in Tarangire National Park<\/strong><\/a> in 2015.<\/p>\n

\u201cOmo<\/strong> appears to get along with the other giraffes<\/strong>, she has always been seen with a large group of normally coloured giraffe \u2013 they don\u2019t seem to mind her different colouring,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe and our partners are working on giraffe conservation and anti-poaching to help give Omo<\/strong> and her relatives a better chance of survival. We hope that she lives a long life and that some day she has calves of her own.\u201d.<\/p>\n

What is leucism?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Leucism<\/strong> <\/a>inhibits pigmentation in some skin cells;<\/p>\n

It is different to albinism<\/strong><\/a> where no melanin is produced at all;<\/p>\n

Animals with leucism<\/strong> may have darker pigment in their soft tissue;<\/p>\n

Giraffes<\/strong> with leucism<\/strong> retain their dark eyes, whereas animals with albinism<\/strong> have red eyes;<\/p>\n

Birds<\/strong>, lions<\/strong>, fish<\/strong>, peacocks<\/strong>, penguins<\/strong>, eagles<\/strong>, hippos<\/strong>, zebras<\/strong>, monkeys<\/strong> and snakes<\/strong> have all displayed traits of leucism<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

But Omo<\/strong> is not the only living exemplar of white giraffe<\/strong>. Untill March 2020 there were other White giraffes<\/strong> in Kenya<\/strong><\/a>, in Ishaqbini Hirola Community Conservancy<\/a>, but rangers had found the carcasses of the female and her calf in a village in north-eastern Kenya’s Garissa County<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

A third white giraffe<\/strong> is still alive.<\/p>\n

The mother and her calf were found in a “skeletal state”, and were thought to have died at least four months ago, Ishaqbini Hirola Conservancy<\/a><\/strong> said in a twitter statement.<\/p>\n
