In addition to <strong>beaches<\/strong> and <strong>wildlife<\/strong>, <strong>Gambia<\/strong> is known for the city of <strong>Jufureh<\/strong>, made famous by the <strong>novel<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Roots:_The_Saga_of_an_American_Family\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Roots by Alex Haley<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\r\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?q=gambia&amp;t=m&amp;z=8&amp;output=embed&amp;iwloc=near\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" aria-label=\"gambia\"><\/iframe><\/p>\r\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Gambia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>The Gambia<\/strong><\/a> is an excellent destination for travelers interested in <a href=\"https:\/\/it.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Africa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Africa<\/strong><\/a>, despite its small size has an excellent <strong>coastline<\/strong>, dense <strong>forest<\/strong> inland, a <strong>river<\/strong> surrounded by <strong>markets and fishermen<\/strong>, and traditional cities with several<strong> colonial-style buildings<\/strong>. The Gambia is the smallest country on the African continent and is divided in two by the river of the same name.<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>The Gambia<\/strong> follows the course of the <strong>river<\/strong> of the same name that rises in the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fouta_Djallon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Fouta-Djallon massif<\/strong><\/a> in <strong>Guinea<\/strong>. Unfortunately, rainfall has decreased by 30% in the last 30 years.<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>History of the Gambia<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p>Historically, culturally and linguistically linked to <strong>Senegal<\/strong>, <strong>Gambia<\/strong> was divided from its neighbour in the 18th century by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gouvernement.fr\/en\/news\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>France<\/strong> <\/a>and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>England<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\r\n<p>Most of the region was conquered by France, but a narrow piece of land around the<strong> Gambia River<\/strong> was ceded to England. It was this small area that became T<strong>he<\/strong> <strong>Gambia<\/strong>. <strong>The Gambia<\/strong> has its historical\/economic roots in the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/History_of_the_Gambia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>slave trade<\/strong><\/a> with European states.<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>Different ethnic groups<\/strong> live in the <strong>Gambia<\/strong>, each preserving its own language and tradition. <strong>Mandinka<\/strong> is the largest, followed by <strong>Fula<\/strong>, <strong>Wolof<\/strong>, <strong>Jola<\/strong>, <strong>Serahule<\/strong>, <strong>Serers<\/strong> and <strong>Bianunkas<\/strong>.
